Clarens Retreat Guesthouse, is situated in the idyllic Village of Clarens which, at 1850m above sea level, is the highest habitable village in the Free State and third highest in South Africa.
Accommodation is offered in eleven stylishly decorated and fully equipped self-catering units, which are each able to accommodate from 2 to 4 guests with a maximum of 24 guests at any given time. To keep the chill at bay during a cold and sometimes snowy winter, units are either equipped with under-carpet heating or log-fuelled fireplaces.
Clarens boasts a large variety of restaurants, authentic shops and art galleries, many of which operate from historic buildings dating back to the early 1900s. The Titanic Rock, an impressive buttress guards the entrance to Clarens and was named the same year the Titanic sank, which coincidentally is also the same year Clarens was proclaimed a Village.
Golden Gate Highlands National park is situated 17km to the east and, apart from its sheer beauty and impressive mountains, is home to Massospondylus fossils dating back more than 180 million years ago.
Visit Clarens simply to rest, shop, or dine, or pursue specific interests like visiting Heritage Sites, Anglo-Boer War sites, palaeontology or Bushman rock-art…Clarens simply has it all!
